Born November 9, 1950 Died July 29, 2010

JOE KELLY, who has died aged 59 of cancer, was editor of the Hamilton Advertiser newspaper in Lanarkshire for 14 years.

Kelly's 42-year career in journalism reached its pinnacle in 2002 with his appointment as editor-in-chief of Scottish and Universal Newspapers, publishers of the Hamilton Advertiser. The job gave him overall editorial responsibility for about 30 weekly newspaper titles across Scotland.

Mr Kelly, born to Joe and Cathie Kelly, was brought up in Blairbeth, Lanarkshire. On leaving school in 1966 he joined Beaverbrook Newspapers in Glasgow in 1968 and worked as a copy taker and reporter for both the Scottish Daily Express and the Evening Citizen. Two years later he joined the Advertiser's sister paper, the Rutherglen Reformer, as a reporter and, in 1975, he was promoted to chief reporter.

His long association with the Advertiser started in 1979 when he became the paper's assistant editor. Three years later he became production editor for the company's Lanarkshire and Lothian titles. He was for three years editor of the Lothian Courier in Bathgate, before returning to the Advertiser as editor in 1995.

During his time at the helm of the Advertiser, the title won the 'campaigning newspaper of the year' accolade in the 1999 Newspaper Sales and Promotions Awards for a series of hard-hitting stories on Hamilton's drug problems.

He co-ordinated the Advertiser's 'Bring Accies Back Home' campaign. It turned the spotlight on the club's new stadium problems and was considered to have played a part in paving the way for the club's return to the town.

Kelly was always a talented sub-editor with a flair for page layout and headline writing.

He leaves a daughter Jo Ann, 26. His well-attended Requiem Mass took place St Columbkille's Church, Rutherglen, followed by a service at Linn Crematorium in Glasgow.
