High-flying stunt rider combats wind at River Days

Aquatic shows, historical re-enactments, crafts and kids activities also part of event

HAMILTON — Brisk winds on Sunday threatened to ground a high-flying attraction at the Great Miami River Days Festival.

Clint Esposito flew up a 20-foot ramp and let go of his bike completely, risking life and limb to entertain the crowd late Sunday afternoon.

The stunt motorcycle rider, of Team FMX East, was forced to abort a couple runs as stiff winds blew across the river — not ideal conditions to fly high in the air on a bike, according to Jesse VonStein, one of the festival committee members.

“When you get up 20 feet in the air, the wind plays havoc,” he said. “When you are dealing with a 30-foot landing ramp and you’re 75 feet in the air, it’ll blow you, so we have to watch the air.”

But the show, albeit a bit abbreviated, did go on. This was the first time the motorcycle riders participated in the annual riverfront event.

Richard and Shannon Hilton of Hamilton, who patiently waited for the show to start with their three girls, said they have been coming to River Days for a couple years now.

“It’s an inexpensive family event,” Shannon Hilton said.

Her husband agreed. “It’s something where you don’t have to drop a lot of money to have fun,” he said.

The two-day festival featured aquatic shows such as water and jet skiers, kids games — including the world’s largest pinball machine — food vendors, musical groups, historical re-enactments and crafts.

This year, the event also included a tribute to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Sunday’s activities included shows on the water by Typhoon Tommy and the Badgerland Water Ski Team. Children’s activities included a scavenger hunt, with the prize being a new bicycle. Birds of prey that are housed at Hueston Woods were on display, and “natural science song and dance man” Chris Rowlands performed for the crowd.

Hamilton resident Janice Perry, who said she is a regular every year, said she enjoys the American Indian traditions and boat shows. But she said what really draws her out is the sense of community.

“The community all comes out and there is such a fellowship,” she said. “It’s just a tradition.”

The river walk was still crowded with people as vendors packed up their tents late Sunday.

VonStein said crowds thinned out a bit on Saturday because of the rain, but it was a successful event.

“All in all I think it was a great event,” he said. “We were hoping for 80,000 people this year, but I don’t think we quite hit that.”

ROSS TWP. — Six people were transported to area hospitals, one by medical helicopter, after a two-vehicle crash Monday, Sept. 6, in front of Ross High School.

Three adults and three juveniles were involved in the crash that occurred at 6:21 p.m. at 3601 Hamilton Cleves Road, said Officer Mike Broughton, of the Ross Twp. Police Department.

A woman driving a green Chevy Blazer was trying to enter the school’s lot and turned into the path of a white Toyota RAV 4, Broughton said. The woman, who had a 9-year-old passenger in the vehicle with her, told police she did not see the other car coming.

The woman was cited for failure to yield to the right of way, police said.

“It was a pretty severe accident,” Broughton said.

Officers said they would not release the names of those involved in the crash without the approval of Ross Twp. police Chief Ben Kramer. Kramer could not be reached for comment Monday night.

The most serious injury was to an adult male passenger of the Toyota who complained of chest pains and face lacerations, Broughton said. He was flown to University of Cincinnati Hospital.

Others involved in the crash, including the female driver of the Toyota and her two juvenile passengers, were taken to Mercy Fairfield and Children’s Hospital as a safety precaution, police said.

Ben Davis, a 16-year-old student at Ross High School, was at football practice Monday evening and heard the impact and screeching tires from behind the school.

“It caught everyone’s attention,” Davis said.

Police cleared the accident scene in about an hour.

Community arts centers find activities for their attendees, but on Sunday, Sept. 12, the centers get a day to themselves.
That is Community Arts Centers Day, in which arts centers in Middletown, Fairfield and Oxford are participating. All centers will hold activities from noon to 4 p.m.
Middletown
The Middletown Arts Center, on 130 N. Verity Parkway, will have what it calls a “paint for all ice cream social” from noon to 4 p.m. Attendees will be invited to create a mural and sample ice cream donated by Dillman Foods, said Sherry Pieratt, the center’s coordinator of development. Artists will provide demonstrations in watercolor, drawing, colored pencil, acrylics and other media.
“We want this to be a fun day for families. We want to have kids here, but they have to be accompanied by adults. The idea is to show how arts can bring people together in a vibrant neighborhood,” Pieratt said.
Fairfield
The Fairfield Community Arts Center, on 411 Wessel Drive, will offer samples of the dances, theater and arts opportunities it provides on a regular basis, said Heidi Schiller, the manager of the center.
Parents will be able to learn about arts opportunities and after-school activities and classes for children, while the kids can make and take home their own pottery piece. Belly dance and salsa demonstrations will be offered, the Kids in the Spotlight group will perform scenes from their production of “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” and the Fairfield Footlighters will perform scenes from their upcoming show, Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap.”
Oxford
Oxford’s Community Art Center on 10 S. College Ave. will present a range of activities, from the sounds of the Oxford Gourd and Drum Ensemble to the sights of artwork by portrait artist Rod Randall, watercolorist Kathy Baxter and paper-maker Rebecca Fallat. Children can participate in a Harvest party .
“My hope is that this will publicize what we do and show that we’re prolific and people will realize that we’re everywhere,” said Caroline Croswell, executive director of the center.
It’s a fine day for art
When people hear the words “arts center,” they might think of a “place where you go to look at artwork.”
That’s partly true, but the community arts centers in Middletown, Fairfield and Oxford all offer more than that, and all will showcase their offerings on Community Arts Center Day Sunday, Sept. 12.
The Middletown center comes closest to the classic definition of the arts center, offering mostly galleries and classes in visual arts. The center has existed as an organization since 1957; it has been in its current building at 130 N. Verity Parkway since 1965. For many years that building was home to an organization called Arts in Middletown that also housed facilities for the Middletown Symphony and Middletown Lyric Theatre.
That umbrella organization dissolved by 2002, leaving the arts center as the sole tenant. During Community Arts Center Day, attendees will create a mural, which might be placed outside the center, or at a business in the community, said Sherry Pieratt, the development coordinator.
Part of the idea of having the activities that day is to make art seem more approachable, she said.
“We want people to understand that art is fun ,” said Pieratt.
Fairfield’s Community Arts Center is a more recent creation, opening its doors five years ago. Fairfield’s arts center is run by the city. It hosts shows by the theater group the Fairfield Footlighters, concerts and dances, plus arts classes and other offerings.
“Our arts center is unique as the citizens of Fairfield are unique … if you look at the trend, citizen-supported arts centers are the trend. That backing gives us a lot of freedom,” said Heidi Schiller, the manager of the center.
Oxford’s Community Arts Center runs out of a historical building that was once a women’s college. The original structure dates back to 1849, said Caroline Croswell, the executive director of the arts center.
However, the arts center is much newer. It was incorporated in 2001 and opened in 2006. While most art centers go out to the community for content, community members most often suggest what should be there, she said.
“Community arts centers are popping up all over greater Cincinnati, and we hope, all over the country. We have the organizations networking,” she said,
In fact, that’s how the Community Arts Centers Day was created, said Mike Boberg, the director of shared services at Cincinnati’s Fine Arts Fund, which provides support for the arts centers. He said the idea was the brainchild of Ruth Dickey of the Clifton Cultural Arts Center.
“She said we have such great stuff going on that we ought to have one day where people can come in and see what we do,” Boberg said.
The Fitton Center for the Creative Arts in Hamilton is not participating in the Community Arts Center Day because it concentrated its efforts on the similar Fine Arts Fund Sampler Weekend, said Jodi Fritsch, the director of marketing and communications.
However, Fitton is embarking on a new project: a workshop in partnership with Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.
Fritsch said this is an all-day sculpture event with local artists Tracy Featherstone, Jennifer Ustick, Lisa Siders and Denise Burge, who will demonstrate how to create site-specific sculpture using natural elements collected at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.
The workshop will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park on 1763 Hamilton-Cleves Road. The cost is $50 for members and $70 for nonmembers. After Sept. 11, the cost will be $55 for members and $75 for nonmembers. Call (513)-863-8873 for details.

Sightings expose spread of deadly ragwort; New blackspots identified as mapping of weed accelerates

0 Comments | Journal (Newcastle, England), The, August 16, 2010

Byline: Paul Tully

MORE sightings of the deadly ragwort have been reported by Journal readers, confirming its spread throughout the North East.

Over a dozen more North blackspots have been identified, with Northumberland and Tyneside the worst areas. Last week, we revealed that a livery farm of 40 horses in East Durham was threatened by the spread of ragwort in an adjacent field.

After that, Journal readers came up with more problem patches in South Gosforth, Brunswick, Seaton Burn, Seghill, Corbridge, Hexham, Wooler, Alnwick, Pegswood, Widdrington, Belford and Berwick. Eunice Burley of Pegswood said the familiar tall-stemmed yellow weed was visible on half an acre of land close to a bike track off the A197.

Mrs Burley said horses and dogs were regularly walked in the area.

Common ragwort is dangerous to animals and especially horses, where it can cause fatal liver damage if eaten.

David Turnbull told The Journal he had seen the ragwort on the southern outskirts of Alnwick in north Northumberland.

And there were two separate reports of the weed growing on the side of the A1 near Berwick.

Audrey Kenny said she had counted 20 flowering plants 100 metres north of the A699 Paxton junction.

Mary Proe, of Etal, told us she had seen ragwort on the road between Wooler and Kirknewton,.

Another caller reported sightings of the weed at Big Waters, Brunswick, north of Newcastle, as well as at South Gosforth, Seghill, and on the A69 and Military Roads near Hexham and Corbridge. And Sue Cansdale of Hartburn, Morpeth, whose intervention prompted The Journal's investigation, said she had located three more ragwort sites.

Ms Cansdale reported: "There is a whole long string of plants clearly visible on the edge of a wood adjacent to an arable field at Angerton Steads about a mile from Bolam Lake.

"And a field on the left of High House Bank on the Hartburn to Morpeth road is covered with ragwort."

She added that she had also seen horses in a ragwort-infested field close to the Consett road exit from the MetroCentre.

Meanwhile, the owners of a ragwort-infested farm field in Seaton, East Durham, alongside Haverley House Farm, say they are still considering the future of the site.

Cornwall Light and Power Ltd, which had an application for three wind turbines on South Sharpley Farm turned down at Christmas, is understood to be preparing a renewed application.

But farmer Philip Lee, of Haverley House, says common ragwort has spread across South Sharpley and his horses are "only the width of a barbed wire fence away".
