A journal (through French from Latin diurnalis, daily) has several related meanings:
- a daily record of events or business; a private journal is usually referred to as a diary.
- a newspaper or other periodical, in the literal sense of one published each day;
- many publications issued at stated intervals, such as magazines, or scholarly pacific journals, academic journals, or the record of the transactions of a society, are often called journals. Although journal is sometimes used, erroneously[citation needed], as a synonym for "magazine", in academic use, a journal refers to a serious, scholarly publication, most often peer-reviewed. A non-scholarly magazine written for an educated audience about an industry or an area of professional activity is usually[citation needed] called a professional magazine.
The word "journalist" for one whose business is writing for the public press has been in use since the end of the 17th century.

Open access journals are scholarly journals that are available to the reader without financial or other barrier other than access to the internet itself. Some are subsidized, and some require payment on behalf of the author. Subsidized journals are financed by an academic institution or a government information center.

A public journal is a record of day-by-day events in a Parliament or Congress. It is also called minutes or records.

The term "journal" is also used in business: Journal is the book in which the transactions are entered the first time they are processed.
- a book in which an account of transactions is kept prior to a transfer to the ledger in the process of bookkeeping; or
- an equivalent to a ship's log, as a record of the daily run, such as observations, weather changes, or other events of daily importance.

According to Wikipedia, Erskine May died in 1886. The reference to Parliamentary Practice is dated 1906. Surely it refers to a particular edition, but I doubt any currently available editions have the same page numbers. Either an actual copy of the book, such as ISBN 0-406-29101-2 (1971), ISBN 0-406-29103-9 (1983), or ISBN 0-406-97094-7 (2004), should be cited by someone who has it, or else the information should be given as per Wikipedia's guidelines on citing intermediate sources with reference to the 1911 source. I've twice reverted edits by 115.113.232.2 because they don't seem justified. Specifically:

was changed by this editor to
journal refers to a serious, regular, cited, scholarly publication, of original research, most often peer-reviewed by qualified personnel.
This is misleading because it overlooks the following facts:
1. Some serious journals are published irregularly as a simple search will show.
2. New journals, defunct journals and journals in obscure subjects will be cited little if at all.
3. Journals contain material other than original research, such as news, reviews and opinion. The word "scholarly" covers this, but "original research" is unnecessary.
4. "Qualified personnel" don't peer review anything. "Experts" might be OK, but in any case it's all covered by the link to peer-review.
The following sentence:A non-scholarly magazine written for an educated audience about an industry or an area of professional activity is usually called a professional magazine.
was altered to
A non-scholarly, irregular, investigative magazine written for a interest group about an industry or an area of professional activity is typically excluded from this definition. For instance, Wikipedia.org is not a journal.
The original sentence is about common-or-garden professional magazines and is clearly intended to distinguish them from journals. Why change it to being about investigative magazines? And then why give wikipedia as an example of an investigative magazine? This is simply turning a meaningful sentence into irrelevant nonsense.

making it totally incorrect. Open Access journals do not have to be accessed by way of an RSS feed, and plenty of them don't have RSS feeds. The implication of this edit is that all OA journals have feeds.
